How about Sarrebourg - a small friendly town in Lorraine (Department 57)?
Good as a base for visiting some splendid scenery and attractions, including the Shiplift at nearby Saint-Louis-Arzviller, a picture of which is just below.

***Technical details of the boatlift, called Le Plan Incliné: built in 1969, the first of its kind in France, it replaced 17 locks that took nearly a whole day to navigate. Boats, and water, are now lifted up 45 metres in approximately 4 minutes. The Plan Incliné connects the waterways of the Marne and the Rhine.
There are plenty of waterways nearby. A bit further away is Strasbourg to the east and Nancy to the west. At Mulhouse, south of Strasbourg, is the home of the Bugatti Motor Museum. A Bugatti Royale (photograph by Brian Ridpath) forms the background to the Welcome Page. Some 3 to 4 hours away is Ste. Jean d'Arc country - her birth place at Domremy and the victory celebration town of Rheims. Sarrebourg itself, as well as the region around, has plenty of good and varied restaurants that include:
Chez Dinh: - Peking/Canton/Thai: prices reasonable for good food. Tel: 87 23 00 43
Chez Michelle: - A short drive out of the town but with a superb French cuisine by the proprietors: expensive, but worth every penny. Tel: 87 03 92 25
